Leicester Grammar Junior School Friends
LGJS Friends are a group of active parents/carers and school staff who meet regularly to raise funds and organise school events that aim to further bring together the whole school community. We are not a conventional PTA: we are not involved in the decision-making process of the school nor do we represent parents to the school.
Since the move to the Great Glen site in 2008 our main focus has been on providing items for the school playground. Some examples include:
- Infant and Junior playground equipment
- Quiet playground games area equipment
- Friends garden growing area
- Junior playground assault course
- Racing bikes for older pupils and relevant staff training
Favourite annual school events include the Quiz and Curry night in the Lent Term (this year scheduled for Friday 6th March 2015).
The Christmas Fayre is a hugely popular family event with many stalls that offer gifts and fun competitions as well as the chance for the younger children to meet Santa!
Examples of other previous events that Friends have organised include:
- Auction of Promises
- Paupers’ Ball and The Charity Ball
- Family Fun Day
- Pupil discos
- Diwali celebration evenings
To help liaise with parents/carers, Class Reps often organise social events within their class parent groups. Getting together outside of the playground environment can be a great way to get to know other families. A pupil’s Leicester Grammar School career can potentially span a staggering 15 years so you’ll be bumping into the same cohort of parents for quite a while!
Second Hand Uniform Shop
Friends also runs the second-hand uniform shop. A dedicated team of volunteers organise uniform sales regularly. Up-coming dates are advertised on the school noticeboard in the playground, in the newsletter and via the School text service. Whilst supporting the School financially, Friends also aim to support other local charitable causes as parents/carers appreciate the value that this work has for all involved.
How to Get Involved
There are currently over 45 committee members, so if you would like to just find out more about how Friends works or would be willing to get involved in any way then speak to your child's Class Rep or come along to a Friends meeting.
Co-chairs 2016-2017: Mrs Shelina Laurenti and Dr Sanjay Gadhia
