Friends of Leicester Grammar Junior School
LGJS Friends are a group of parents/carers and school staff who meet regularly to support the school by raising funds and organising social events that aim to further bring together the whole school community whilst having fun! Getting together outside of the playground environment can be a great way to get to know other families. A pupil’s Leicester Grammar School career can potentially span a staggering 15 years so you’ll be bumping into the same cohort of parents for quite a while! Each class has a ‘class rep’, providing information on Friends activity and organising their own class group events. However we are not a conventional PTA: we are not involved in the decision-making process of the school nor do we represent parents to the school.
Since the move to the Great Glen site in 2008 our main focus has been on providing items for the school playground. Some examples include:
- The pirate ship for the Infant playground
- Quiet playground games area equipment
- Friends garden growing area
- Junior playground assault course
- Racing bikes for older pupils and relevant staff training
We also provide funding towards events for the children:
- First Aid Training for all Year 5 pupils
- Welcome Event for Foundation Stage children and their families
- Magic Show and Disco
- Year 6 Leavers party
Whilst supporting the School financially, Friends also get involved by helping the school at various events such as Sports Week and Open Days. Recently we have started arranging for school drama productions and the Infant Nativities to be filmed.
Friends also aims to support other local charitable causes as parents/carers appreciate the value that this work has for all involved.
This year the main event for the Friends will be the Silver Ball to celebrate 25 years of Leicester Grammar Junior School, which is scheduled to be held in the Trinity Term. The Christmas Fayre is a hugely popular family event with many activities and stalls that offer gifts and fun competitions as well as the chance for the younger children to meet Santa. It also features our impressive Christmas Hamper Raffle, which always proves to be a huge success thanks to the kind donations of the Infant parents. Also making a return this year is the annual favourite of many parents - the Quiz and Curry night in the Lent Term.
Examples of other events that Friends have organised in previous years include:
- Auction of Promises
- Paupers’ Ball and The Charity Ball
- Family Fun Day
- Diwali celebration evenings
Second Hand Uniform Shop
Friends also runs the second-hand uniform shop. A dedicated team of volunteers organise uniform sales regularly. The future dates of sales are advertised in the newsletter and via Parentmail.
We very much welcome new members so if you would like to find out more about how Friends works or would be willing to get involved in any way, maybe just helping with a particular event, then speak to one of the Co-chairs, your child's Class Rep or simply come along to one of our informal Friends meetings. We are always very grateful for more support.
Co-chairs 2017-2018: Mrs Jessica Horton and Mrs Minal Sherwin
