Pupils at Leicester Grammar School and Leicester Grammar Junior School
have now been located on our new school site in Great Glen for over two
years and they have been thoroughly enjoying the modern and numerous
facilities now available to them. The £33 million project ,which opened
in 2008, created the finest, purpose-built independent school in the
country in over a decade and brought together the two schools on one
site for the first time. As such, we can now offer co-education to boys
and girls from the age of 3 up to 18 in one convenient rural location.
The school complex consists of a 13,500 sq.ms two storey building built mainly in red
brick with some render and feature cedar cladding. The main school is laid out along
a north-south "street" with the double-height entrance and reception, hall and the
refectory placed to the west and teaching accommodation located in four curriculum
wings to the east punctuated by landscaped courtyards. The buildings have been designed
to incorporate sustainable technologies and to minimise energy usage by high levels of
insulation, natural lighting and natural ventilation.
The main teaching block has a large double-height, fully glazed library at its heart,
14 dedicated science laboratories and a lecture theatre, a music school and recital
room complete with recording studio, a drama studio, an assembly hall to seat 900 people
and a refectory that will accommodate 450 diners. The sixth form lounge provides a
central hub for the A level students and there is an on-site cafe exclusively for their
use. There is also a linked, but at the same time self contained, junior school that has
its own entrance, hall and playgrounds.
Both schools benefit from a surrounding 75 acres of grass playing fields which include
two floodlit all weather hockey pitches, 5 rugby pitches, a dedicated cricket pitch and
8 hard tennis/netball courts. The pitches were all sown in early 2007 and have now had
three growing seasons. The indoor sports complex offers 6 badminton courts, basketball,
netball and indoor cricket nets in the main hall, a gym/dance studio, a well equipped
fitness suite and a 6 lane, 25 metre heated indoor swimming pool. There is also a sports
pavilion that has integral changing rooms and an upstairs club house with viewing
platform overlooking the main rugby, hockey and cricket pitches with further views across
the Sence valley.
The entire site is fully networked with significant investment in IT including computers
- there are 50 in the library alone- laptops, interactive whiteboards and projectors.
There is car parking for over 170 cars and the school buses stop directly outside the
main school building.
