6 July 2010 - Invitation to tour the St.Nicholas Building by Hallam Contracts
Dear Old Leicestrians
As an Old Leicestrian myself (1995 – 2002) I was delighted when Hallam
Contracts were awarded the project to refurbish the St Nicholas
building to become St Martins, the heart of the Diocese of Leicester.
The Project Director, Rev. Pete Hobson, is keen to maintain links with
Leicester Grammar School. He would like to invite you to attend a tour of
the building at 2pm on Sunday 19th September with refreshments afterwards
at the Guildhall Visitors Centre. You would also be very welcome to attend
Choral Evensong at the Cathedral at 4pm.
Please let me know in advance if you plan on attending by contacting
me on 0116 2720811 or by email to loldridge@hallamgroup.com.
With kind regards

17 March 2010 - Naomi Atkinson [OL '09] in Africa
Since leaving LGS at the end of last summer Naomi opted for a GAP year before
taking up a place to read Sociology at Durham University. Naomi is currently
in Uganda helping out in a school having chosen to volunteer with Africa & Asia
Venture.
We have been contacted by one of the Africa & Asia Venture Co-ordinators who has
said 'Naomi and the rest of the group are settling in well to their schools and
are adjusting happily to African Life!'
26 February 2010 - Ben [OL ‘08] & Imogen [OL ‘09] Murray
Since leaving LGS Ben and Imogen have both taken their horse riding on another
level. Ben has taken an active part in riding at Bristol University and has
won all 3 of his University riding competitions where he has to ride 1 or 2
different and unknown horses. His team has also qualified for the University
regional finals. Ben has had an invitation to go abroad to represent GB
University students in the University Nations Cup and will leave at Easter
for Belgium with the Team GB university riders. He has also just returned
from GB under 21 training for potential selection for the European teams
this summer.
Imogen has also been busy having taken her first equestrian exam last week
and is now awaiting the results. She has also qualified 3 rides in 4
classes for the National Championships to be held on Sat 27th Feb.
Congratulations to them both.
25 February 2010 - Lucy Barnes [OL '03] to run the Sheffield Half-Marathon
I am running the Sheffield Half-Marathon on 25th April 2010 for Crossroads,
a charity that supports carers in the UK.
A carer is an ordinary person who makes the decision to look after a relative
or a friend in need. They sacrifice their time and energy to a role that can
be emotionally and physically exhausting -- it is a difficult and frequently
an isolating experience. There are currently 6 million carers in the UK, 1.2
million of whom are caring for over 50 hours a week, and it is estimated
that they save the government £87 billion each year by providing the
support they do.Crossroads supports carers practically, for example by
providing respite care and counselling services for carers, as well as
providing advice and guidance. They work locally to provide services and
support to individuals, and nationally to support the development of
legislation and policy that improves conditions for carers. I am supporting
Crossroads because I believe that nobody who provides care and support to
someone else should go without care and support themselves. It's easy to
overlook the person who cares for someone who is suffering, but anybody who
makes this kind of sacrifice for a person they love should never be
overlooked. Running the half-marathon is also a personal challenge -- I've
always been an inconsistent runner and this will force me to train properly
and commit to completing a significant distance.Every penny you donate will
encourage me to train harder and to run faster.
Thank you for your support!

17 December 2009 - Matthew Gee [OL '01] appointed principal trombone of the Royal
Philharmonic Orchestra
Matthew Gee [OL '01] has just been appointed principal trombone of the Royal
Philharmonic Orchestra starting in the New Year; based in London, this orchestra
has a diverse range of musical repertoire, which is one of the factors which
appealed to him. Besides the typical symphonic repertoire from Beethoven to
Shostakovich, the orchestra plays for large ‘one-off’ occasions e.g. Christmas in
the O2 Arena, a Sondheim 80th birthday concert and recording TV and film music. It
tours world-wide but also appears locally, for example, in Northampton. It has
several very eminent conductors including Dutoit, Gatti and Slatkin. Who could
say ‘no’ to such an opportunity?

1 October 2009 – Fab Rose (OL ’06)
‘Most of you may know that last year in June I had a subarachnoid haemorrhage and was
very lucky to make it. This year I was diagnosed with a large aneurysm that had formed
in the 9 months since my first operation. My eldest sister, Sylvie, brother-in-law,
Justin, and friend, Emma wanted to do something to raise money for the neurosurgical
team who helped me. My sister explains it all better than I can:
'After my younger sister, Fab, had a second aneurysm diagnosed earlier this year,
we were desperate to find the best place for treatment for her. After a lot of research
Addenbrooke's in Cambridge seemed to be the perfect place.
It was by no means an easy ride, with the first surgery being unsuccessful and trips in
and out of the high dependancy unit, but after 10 days she was finally allowed to leave
the hospital and come home to begin her recovery. Without the fantastic help from the
team at Addenbrooke's, especially Mr Kirkpatrick, Dr Higgins and their teams, I really
don't think that we would be the family that we are today - although I have to tell you
that the tenacity of my little sis made their job easier from the start...there was no
way she was going to let it beat her.
We really have so much to thank them for. During those early days out of hospital, I
started thinking that I should do something that pushed me really hard, beyond my limits
if I could; nothing any of us do can be close to what Fab fought for, but this makes me
feel like I'm at least trying. Jus was more than keen to rise to the challenge, as ever
and Emma was nodding before the words had fully left my mouth....! So, on the 29th November
we will be running the Florence Marathon with such an incentive to get to the end!
Please help however you can, I know this year has been a difficult one financially, we're
all feeling it. But seeing how easy it can be to save a life with the right equipment...I
would love for nobody to have to go through what we've all gone through, but that's not
achievable....what is achievable is to make the team's job easier so that they can diagnose
and treat quicker.'
I have attached a picture of the portable CT scanner that we are raising money for, this will
allow the neurosurgeons to diagnose patients quicker and get them the treatment that they so
need.

14 September 2009 - John Christie
It is with great sadness that we have to tell you that after a year long battle
against cancer, John Christie passed away last Thursday. His funeral will take place
at Perth Crematorium this Friday. It will be family flowers only with any donations
being made to Cancer Research.
15 September 2009 - Four Kings climb Kilimanjaro
The Headmaster and his four sons, James Andrew and Henry, reached the crater rim of
Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, between 4 and 5 am on August 12th.
They set out on their final ascent at midnight after five previous days of trekking
and acclimatisation walks.
These photographs give some impression of the experiences they had during their time
on the mountain. In following the sequence of pictures you can see how the vegetation
changes and, from the layers of clothing, how temperature conditions vary throughout
the trek.
The pictures do very little justice to the scale of the mountain, the glaciers at the
crater rim and how they all felt at different stages of the climb.
The Headmaster comments that, ‘many people have described climbing Kilimanjaro as the
hardest thing they have ever done in their life. I have to agree with them.Thank you
to all who have generously supported the fund raising effort we linked to our climb.’
If you would still like to donate you can do so with a cheque made out to Leicester
Grammar School or through the JustGiving web site at

Congratulations to Nick Carr (OL 06) who has been offered a First officers position
with Ryanair starting in May of this year.
Friday 13th February 2009 - OL returns to give General Studies talk
As part of the Lower Sixth General Studies course, we are lucky enough to have a
variety of speakers. This week saw James Roffee (OL ’03) return to speak about the
issue of human rights. He covered a lot of ground, answering questions such as what
are human rights, how do we protect them, who they are for etc. His talk was well
received as he put forward an entertaining set of case studies and there were some
excellent questions and interaction from the students. James is a PhD student at
Leicester University and teaches law at both Leicester and De Montfort Universities.
James will return to the school to take part in ‘Question Time’ in late February as
one of the panellists answering questions put forward by the audience.
09 Febuary 2009 - WE WILL ROCK YOU TICKET OFFER FOR OL’s
Joseph Connor (OL ’06) has written to extend a deal to any OL's for discounted top
priced tickets for We Will Rock You the Queen Musical. The price of a top price ticket,
from the theatre, is set at £60 but because of the hype of the show tickets are hard to
get hold of directly from the box office. This means people go to the ticket agents and
can pay upwards of £90 for a ticket that is only worth £60 at face value.
Being a part of the cast Joseph has a ticket deal, which is as follows;
Monday to Thursday, best seats in the house is reduced from £60 to £27.50
Friday, Sat Matinee and Sat Evening shows are at the usual £60 - but are guaranteed seats.
(Box office will tell you we are sold out these days until mid 2009, but special house
seats are reserved for cast so they are guaranteed.)
Joseph is willing to sort tickets out for anyone who wishes to see the show anytime.
If you are real Queen fans, you could check out the calendar on the We Will Rock You
Official Website to see when Brian May plays on stage live.
So if you are interested you can contact Joseph on :

27 June 2008 - Saturday 21st June Reunion
Thank you to everyone who joined us last Saturday to say goodbye
to LGS before our move to Great Glen. Over 200 OL's and their
families joined us for the Open Afternoon and had a great time
reminiscing with other OL's and members of staff. The evening event
was also a success with 100 people attending the (slightly soggy)
Hog Roast at Greyfriars. Thanks to Katharine Staunton [OL '92 &
current member of staff) and Emma Ward (OL '97) for all their help
in organising and putting on the event.
