08 July 2010 - 1st XI Cricket News

The 1st XI played 2 important fixtures last week.

The first was against the MCC which ended with LGS just falling short by 16 runs, finishing on 152 chasing the MCC total of 168 for 7.
Antoine McGuinn and Dhuval Govani each taking 3 wickets and Antoine followed his bowling with a sterling innings of 62. Ross Clarke was unfortunately run out when the winning total looked in sight for a well constructed 35. It is always a great honour to welcome the games greatest club to the school and we look forward to next years fixture with optimism.

On Friday we welcomed St Kevin's College from Melbourne, Australia as part of their 3 week English tour. St Kevin's are a Boys School of over 2000 and they run 4 or more teams at each age group so we knew it would be a difficult fixture. This was very much another game we should have won and I just hope the experiences gained this year make the team play with a harder and more competitive edge in the future.
We bowled and fielded extremely well to keep St Kevin's down to 129 but unfortunately we again just fell short when it looked likely a win would be possible. We played shots that were not on or required and took chances that were not necessary. A cool head could and probably would have taken us home but once again it is very much a learning process.

A number of players have made their 1st XI debuts in the last weeks of the season these include - Yr 10's Zain Rizvi( 3 wickets for 25 Runs v/s Loughborough GS 1st XI) Shaan Khann, George Hutchinson and Alex Frith,
Yr 9's Tom Smith, Will Hunt, Kasim Khan and Mo Mulji. We congratulate them and wish them well during their 1st XI careers. Also mention should be made of the players that received their 1st XI ties for 10 appearances, presented at lunch during the MCC game by the Headmaster. - Avish Patel, Antione McGuinn, Tom Measures, Tim Spencer and Andy Williams.

We look forward to the Old Boy's game to be played this week - Mr Geldard is returning and other names on the list to play are - Richard Turnell, Matt Gee, Michael Potter, Elliot Keable, Michael Pozerskis, Atish Patel, Dev Dhiman, Jan Toor, Bhavish Patel and Visal Lodia so a strong if immobile team is expected!

Mr Potter.

08 July 2010 - U12 County Cup Cricket v. Loughborough

This was another very good team performance with everyone contributing either with the bat, the ball or as an enthusiastic fielder. This is only the second time in 13 years that the U12 team have been county champions and it was a thoroughly deserved victory against another good team.

We won the toss and elected to bowl but a flurry of wides meant they got off to a good start before captain Jahangir Khan struck twice in a couple of overs. Their batsmen then started to play some effective shots and they had reached 55–2 when a good piece of fielding from Oliver Marriott resulted in a run out. A great running catch from Zaki Arshad in the next over got rid of their opener who had been looking very dangerous and we were then right in the game. Rohit Francis took 4 wickets in the space of nine balls and, despite a few hits at the end, when Tom Fowler took the final wicket, they had only made 94 runs.

On a good pitch with a fast outfield, sensible batting was all that was required and after the early loss of opener James Hunt, Sonnie Broadley and Zaki Arshad shared a partnership of 63 runs to put us in sight of victory. Zaki in particular played some lovely drives while Sonnie was always alert for the quick single or two to keep the score moving. When they both fell in quick succession there was a chance of a wobble but James Willmott and Oliver Marriott kept their heads and made sure they hit the bad ball hard to bring us home with 9 balls to spare.

This means we are County Champions and so will go forward as Leicestershire’s representatives to a national competition next year.

Final score - LGS 95 – 3 (18.3 overs) Opponents 94 all out (19.5 overs)

08 July 2010 - Maks Orzel News

Walking

Maks Orzel has once again been selected to represent England u17 in two competitions this summer. The first event shall take place on Saturday 17th July in Glasgow where he will be part of the English Schools Athletics Association squad. The second is the Nihill Shield International Race Walk event which shall be held in Tullamore Ireland on Saturday 24th July.

Maks also took part in the Peter Cup Series last week where he was presented with the Keswick Trophy. He claimed first place in the u 17 2k race walk in a winning time of 9mins 42 secs setting the fastest time so far for 2010 and keeping him at the top of the rankings for this event in his age group and nudging him up to 10th place in the overall men’s category.

Rowing

As part of Leicester Rowing Club’s Pair Maks Orzel finished second in Great Britain Rowing’s Under 16 Trials at Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham. In sweltering temperatures the boys rowed an almost perfect race in the 1500m time trial finishing with the second fastest time of 5’:41.4”. The three fastest crews then immediately returned to the start for a side by side race off, again over 1500m. Despite an excellent row the boys were narrowly edged into second place again. Less than an hour later the pair joined forces with club mates to compete in the Coxed Fours event. Unfortunately the Four was unable to equal the performance of the Pair and didn’t make it through to the race off.

07 July 2010 - U13 XI Cricket - LSCA County Semi Final v Rushey Mead

Leicester GS 162 - 4 off 20 overs
Rushey Mead 102 - 7 off 20 overs

The U13 XI left their best performance of the season until their last game. A solid opening partnership between Jack O'Callaghan and Theo Rashid allowed Patrick Sadd and Zayaan Khan to produce an excellent stand of 112 for the third wicket. Patrick finished on 74 and Zayaan on 42. Both batted superbly with some very powerful hitting from Patrick. Rushey Mead replied with a respectable 102 - 7 of their 20 overs but some tight bowling from Patrick (3-0-9-2), Sami Phillips (3-0-14-1) and Raj Bathia (4-0-14-0) never really allowed them the chance to score freely. An excellent fielding perfomance supported the bowlers and this was a really superb finish to the season. Well done to all involved.

Mr Howe

05 July 2010 - U11 Cricket News

U11A XI have won the County cup in a close final against Grace Dieu Manor school. The A team defeated the B team in the semi final.
The XI were then successful in the Midlands Finals at Loughborough Grammar School. They defeated both Laxton School (Oundle School's junior school) and Nott's HS to progress to the National finals (last 4 in the country) which will be played at Oakham School this Friday. We wish them well.

29 June 2010 - County Doubles Tennis Tournament [Girls]

Congratulations to Katherine Wake & Ellen O'Brien who defeated SJN in the final of the U12 County Doubles tennis tournament. They had cruised through to the final beating several opponents in the 'Round Robin' section and were worthy winners of the competition.

Congratulations to Dhianna Hindocha and Rosie Gladdle for coming runners- up in the U14 County Doubles tennis tournament. As year 8s they were playing above their age group and they performed well in the 'Round Robin' section. They lost out in the final to a strong pair from Welland Park.

28 June 2010 - U13 Cricket v Stoneygate School

Leicester GS 107-3
Stoneygate School 89-7

A well contested, competitive 20/20 match between two very closely matched sides. Leicester GS opened strongly with both Theo Rashid (25) and Jack O'Callaghan building a very solid foundation for the rest of the batting, on a difficult wicket. Some strong hitting by both Patrick Sadd (20 not out) and Zayaan Khan left Stoneygate chasing a respectable 108 to win off 20 overs. An excellent opening spell from Patrick Sadd who bowled with real pace and fire removing their top 3 batsmen, gave Leicester GS the upper hand. Patrick's figures were 4-1-11-3. Sam Phillips also bowled a superb line and length without the success he deserved to restrict Stoneygate's scoring opportunities. The spin twins, Alex Tutt (4-0-18-2) and Dhruv Chudasama (4-0-18-1) also bowled well, taking wickets and forcing the opposition to take chances. An excellent win although there are improvements to be made in our fielding. We look forward to the county cup semi-final later in the term.

Congratulations to the entire side, a massive improvement on our previous performance.

27 June 2010 - Midland Counties Hockey Champions

Leicestershire’s under 13s boys hockey team were crowned the Midland champions last weekend at Warwick University. The U13s boy hockey team were competing with 7 other counties from the Midlands. A few weeks ago, the team played 3 matches and they produced stunning performances to successfully come through the qualifying round as group winners and were undefeated.

Warwick University hosted the finals last weekend and the Leicestershire team produced excellent performances to be crowned the Midland champions.

David Cawthorn, Chairman of Leicestershire and Rutland Hockey Association said “It has been many years since one of our teams has been crowned Midland champions and it is a great achievement for the boys and their coach Danny Willcock. This bodes well for the future of hockey in Leicestershire and Rutland. We are also hopeful that some of these boys will progress and go on to represent England in the future”.

Three students from LGS were involved in the team - Wyndham Hogg and Niraj Mavani who both played in the final tournament and Matthew Gilbert was a member of the squad and played in the qualification games.

22 June 2010 - Jessica Hickman

Congratulations to Jessica Hickman who has been selected to represent the England U18 Hockey team at the Home Nations tournament in Cork during July. She has also been selected to play in the UK School Games to be held in September.

21 June 2010 - U12 XI v/s Loughborough GS

Result - Leicester Grammar School won by 7 Wickets

An excellent game of cricket played by 2 promising young sides. Leicester GS lost the toss and were asked to bowl first on a flat wicket and fast outfield on the schools number 2 ground. Leicester fielded exceptionally well throughout the innings with Milka Basra and Oliver Marriot leading the way with some super fielding at cover and mid-wicket. The bowlers held a consistent line through the Loughborough innings, never allowing their batsmen to get away from them and they finished on a reasonable 88 - 5.
James Hunt and Sonnie Broadley have had some very good partnerships this year and this was probably their best because it was made against bowlers of top quality. They put on 66 for the 1st wicket before Sonnie was out for a well made 19. James followed quickly for a super 23 and then Zaki Arshad and Oliver Marriot took us home with over 2 overs to spare and 7 wickets in hand.

Well done and we look forward to the 2 County semi - finals the u/12's are in over the next 2 weeks.

Laurie Potter
Master in Charge of Cricket

21 June 2010 - U14 XI defeat Loughborough Grammar School to remain unbeaten.

Leicester Grammar School 189-4 (30 overs)
Loughborough Grammar School 177 for 9 (30 overs)
Leicester won by 12 runs

Hot on the heels of last week’s victory over King’s Grantham, LGS U14 travelled to Quorn for a friendly against Loughborough Grammar School. Electing to bat on a very hot day, with the pitch looking rock hard and full of runs, LGS quickly lost prolific openers Tom Smith and Will Hunt to injudicious shots. That brought together Kassim Khan and Mo Mulji who accumulated runs well against a useful Loughborough attack before Mulji (15) was run out attempting a risky second. Having been aggressive from the start and ridden his luck outside off stump, Khan took that as his cue to accelerate and was helped by a lovely innings from Rob Scudamore (38), who struck the ball well and ran hard in the heat. By now completely dominant, Khan flayed the bowling all around the ground to end up on a magnificent 100 not out, certainly one of the most impressive schoolboy innings I have witnessed. Leicester’s total of 189-4 in 30 overs was challenging, although eminently gettable on a magnificent batting wicket.
Loughborough’s classy opening pair started well as Leicester took time to settle. After an effortless half century opening stand, Kurtz (21) smashed a fierce return catch to Henry Sawers, who clung on well. Skipper Murty continue to score freely as wickets fell at the other end, and was eventually run out for an outstanding 91 as he tried in vain to keep the strike. Having been criticised for the standard of their ground fielding and the amount of full tosses served up last week, LGS responded extremely positively and tight death bowling by Sawers, Amin, Smith and especially Harry Penfold saw Leicester home by 12 runs as Loughborough left themselves too much to do.
A pitch that allowed batsmen to express themselves and a positive approach from two quality sides made this a most enjoyable afternoon for players and staff alike. LGS will take both confidence and momentum into the national knockout fixtures later in the week.

18 June 2010 - Boys Tennis News

On Friday 18th June, the Leicester Grammar U13b tennis squad played Ratcliffe College. After a very long drive, our team seemed tired, although got a boost in morale from Mr Picknell. Nevertheless, the weather seemed to be against us. We started our singles matches during a heavy downfall of rain and some very windy weather, although our persistence proved successful; with 3 out of 4 of us winning. Dhruv Chudassama played particularly well, with excellent serving from Johnathon Khong. Next we played the doubles, with seeds 1 and 4 together, and 2 and 3. We managed to play very well against their experienced players, although it seemed their strong serving got the better of us, leading to an overall tie between the two teams after these matches. As a result, we were forced to play tiebreaks, although unfortunately their powerful shots lead to a defeat on our side, 3-4. Thank you very much to Mr Picknell for coaching us.

17 June 2010 - U12/U13 Girls Cricket News

The U12 girls' cricket team had their first match against Mount Grace. The match was played in a good spirit and was very close with Leicester Grammar just edging a win.

The U13 girls' cricket team travelled to Mount Grace. The co-captains Georgia Smith and Laila Rizvi opted to bat first and managed a creditable total of 138 off 15 overs with Holly Mould making 58. A good batting performance from the opposition meant it was a thrilling finish, but Georgia Smith held her nerve to bowl a fine final over ensuring a victory by 6 runs.

17 June 2010 - U12 Cricket v.South Charnwood

We were a little fortunate to come out of this game with a win after a below par batting performance but the bowlers rose to the occasion and by bowling straight (9/10 wickets taken were clean bowled and the other was LBW), they took us to what was in the end a comfortable win.

When we batted, scoring was not easy against some accurate bowling and with the pitch keeping very low. Unfortunately, no-one was able to push singles to keep the scoreboard moving and wickets fell regularly with only James Willmott showing much signs of being able to score runs. A devastating burst from one of their bowlers where he took 4 wickets in only 7 balls meant we slumped to only 68 all out.

A focused bowling performance was going to be needed if we were to have any chance and Harmeet Makan got us off to a great start with a wicket from the first ball of their innings. Zaki Arshad then removed their best batsman in the next over and we were back in the game. Harmeet continued to bowl straight, taking 3 more wickets in his next 3 overs and Rohit Francis and Tom Fowler wrapped up their reply sharing 5 wickets in the space of only 3½ overs to leave us winners by 31 runs and into the semi-final where we will need a better batting display to progress further.

Final score - LGS 68 all out (19.2 overs) South Charnwood 37 all out (11.3 overs)

Notable Performances James Willmott 16, Harmeet Makan 4 – 14, Tom Fowler 3 – 2, Rohit Francis 2 – 6 and Zaki Arshad 1 – 12

16 June 2010 - Boys Tennis News v Dixie GS

U15B won 4-2 (rubbers)
U13B lost 6-0.

U15B: Special mention goes to Harry Short who came back from 4-1 down to win his set and George Fossey who was successful on his debut in both singles and doubles. Oliver Moriarty also won both singles and doubles.

U13B Outclassed by stronger and higher-ranked opponents.

14 June 2010 - LGS U15’s vs. Kings Grantham

On 14th June LGS U15 cricket team played against Kings Grantham at home. Our history against Kings was not the most successful in cricketing terms, and we were determined to put up a tough fight. LGS won the toss and elected to bowl on a windy yet sunny afternoon, we got off to a decent start, with George Hutchinson bowling a 4 over spell for only 4 runs and also picking up a wicket in the process. We then brought on Tom Clay and Chris Sansom during the middle overs and both bowlers performed superbly with Tom finishing with 7 overs for 31 runs with 1 wicket, and Chris finishing on 7 overs for 19 runs with 3 wickets. We then used a mix of bowlers with Myles Keable bowling 6 very tight overs and both Shaan Khan and Alex Frith giving very few runs away. We played 35 overs per innings and our fielding was top standard up until the 30th over, where due to fatigue, we allowed Grantham to pick up cheap runs, allowing them to finish on 151 for 5 off 35 overs.

LGS knew we were in with a fighting chance if we managed to prevent the loss of too many wickets, and we got off to a brilliant start with Shaan Khan and Jamie Jameson running singles and setting LGS up with a healthy run rate. However, Shaan soon fell, and LGS lost 3 quick wickets, leaving Grantham on top after 18 overs, where LGS were struggling at 58 for 4. But a magical innings by Jamie Jameson, who led the way with the bat hitting 58, meant that LGS were in with a very good chance of winning, and with 30 needed off 5 overs. However, due to Grantham’s excellent fielding LGS were in a spot of trouble needing 20 off 3 overs. But Alex Frith and Jush Maru made it look too easy as LGS edged to victory with 2 balls to spare. Overall a very good and exciting match, with some very pleasing performances by the lower batting order and Jamie himself, as well as top bowling performances. However, LGS still have some work to do in the field, to achieve the potential that they know they have to be a very dangerous side.

Zain Rizvi - Captain U15's

14 June 2010 - Comprehensive victory for LGS U14 Cricketers

Following a series of rather one-sided league games, the undefeated U14 XI were looking forward to facing the traditionally competitive King’s School, Grantham. Winning the toss and electing to bat, Tom Smith and Will Hunt put on 72 for the first wicket against some accurate and at times aggressive bowling before Hunt fell for 24 trying to force the pace. Having seen off the opening bowlers, Smith was on the verge of really filling his boots when he top edged a pull shot and departed for a typically fluent and classy 42. Kassim Khan (16) and Mo Mulji (23) came together and increased the tempo, mixing hard-run ones and twos with authoritative boundaries, while attractive cameos from Fossey (19) and Scudamore (10) enabled LGS to post a respectable 163-6 in their 30 overs.

King’s were never really in contention, however, as a superb opening spell from Khan, in which he swung the ball away at decent pace, ripped out the openers. Tom Smith (2-10) bowled a miserly spell into the strong wind and was ably supported by Henry Sawers, Dilan Amin and Harry Penfold, who took three late wickets as the Grantham side struggled to 106-8 from their allocation. At face value, a comfortable victory by 57 runs ought to bode well for the rest of the season, but the statistics do not tell the entire story. Once again, the lacklustre fielding effort left a lot to be desired – straightforward catches were grassed, far too many full tosses were served up and a general air of sloppiness was in evidence. The challenge now for this undoubtedly talented side is to improve this aspect of their game – an upcoming friendly against local rivals Loughborough Grammar School and a potential Taverner’s fixture against Oakham School will present far stiffer tests in which hunger and desire in the field could well be the difference between victory and defeat.

10 June 2010 - U12 Cricket v. Rushey Mead

After just missing out on a century stand in the previous match, Sonnie Broadley and James Hunt made it this time with an excellent unbeaten stand of 112 in what were difficult scoring conditions. The outfield was long, damp and rather muddy in places so boundaries were very hard to come by. However this just meant that the pair had to rely on placement and good running between the wickets and this they managed to very good effect. Sonnie, in particular, was very aggressive with his calling and put the fielders under lots of pressure which resulted in errors and extra runs for us. Both batsmen did give chances but they rode their luck and fully deserved their success.

When we bowled, an early run-out by Harmeet Makan put them under pressure straightaway and tight bowling by Rohit Francis, Harmeet and Tom Fowler in particular kept them well behind the run rate. The fielders also supported the bowlers well with Oliver Marriott and Zaki Arshad both taking good catches and James Hunt producing another run-out. Despite a late flurry by one of their openers (who also batted through the entire innings), they finished well short.

This means we win our group in the county league and go through to the play-off semi finals.

Final Score : LGS 112–0 (20 overs) Rushey Mead 86–5 (20 overs)

Notable performances : Sonnie Broadley 48 not out, James Hunt 31 not out (opening stand of 112) and Tom Fowler only conceded 7 runs in 4 overs.

07 June 2010 - U11 Cricket News

The U11a team have made it through to the Semi final stage of the County Cricket Cup. Their opponents after 1/2 term will be the Leicester Grammar u/11b team. It is a great performance to have 2 teams from one year in a County semi final and it should be quite a tussle on the day. Boys from both our Junior and Senior schools make up the teams.

We wish them both well and congratulations

04 June 2010 - Rugby 7's News

On Friday the 4th of june a Year 7 Sevens Squad took on 4 other teams with preliminary games taking place at Oval Park, Oadby and the finals taking part at Welford Road during a break in the corporate Sevens Day. A crowd of around 2,000 people saw the LGS squad beat Kings Grantham 21 - 0 .
The squad included the following- Zaki Arshad, James Wilmott, Joe Cooke, Sonnie Broadley, Milka Basra, Ollie Marriott, Matt Cooke, Jono Ramsbottom, James Hunt, Rohit Francis and James Summerton.
Congratulations to the entire squad.

27 May 2010 - U13 Boys Tennis v.Lancaster Boys

After the first round of singles the score was 2 all after two great performances from Joe and Tom. In the doubles, Alex and I pulled through to win the match. Unfortunately, Joe and Tom failed to win theirs, which meant that the scores were tied at 3 all. This lead to a match tie-break, which Tom and I managed to win, sealing a victory. Thank you to all the team and "Thank you" to Mr. Picknell for coaching us. The team consisted of Joseph Cook [7B], Thomas Fowler [7B], Alex Tutt [8D] and myself.

27 May 2010 - U12 Cricket v. Soar Valley

We were put into bat on a warm bright evening and got off to a good start. James Hunt played some good pull shots to get the score moving while Sonnie Broadley pushed the singles to rotate the strike. However, as the innings progressed, it was Sonnie who started to dominate, playing shots all around the wicket. The partnership was worth 97 when James went for a risky 2nd run and was run out. Sonnie was unperturbed by this and finished off the innings in style, smashing 12 runs off the final over.

Provided we bowled well, this was always going to be a difficult score to beat and so it proved. Their batsmen rarely looked likely to score at the rate required and we were able to give almost the entire team a bowl. Rohit Francis and Devin Patel again bowled a good line and picked up a wicket apiece, while Shaylin Patel, Siddhart Wadhwa and James Hunt also picked up a wicket, two of these coming from alert pieces of work from James Willmott behind the stumps.

You have one more league match remaining against Rushey Mead after half term. If you win this, you will be in the League play-off semi finals.

Final score LGS 113 – 1 (16 overs) Soar Valley 61 – 5 (16 overs)
Notable performances - Sonnie Broadley 48 not out , James Hunt 31(Opening partnership of 97)

27 May 2010 - U13 Cricket v Market Bosworth HS

Leicester GS 166-4
Market Bosworth 43 all out

Jack O'Callaghan 51 not out (retired)
Patrick Sadd 29 not out (retired)
Dru Chudasama 5 wickets for 13 runs

A very strong win against much weaker opposition. However there were very notable performances from Jack, Patrick and Dru. A good performance in the field but we will need to be a lot sharper against teams later in the season. Well done. CWH

25 May 2010 - Tennis News

On Tuesday 25th of May Leicester Grammar School travelled to Lancaster Boys School to play their division 1 tennis match. The team comprising of Rhondell Stabana, James Mackay, Jamie Jameson and Angus Hargreaves. It was all level after the singles as Rhondell had a convincing win of 6-1, James Mackay winning 6-0 then Jamie losing 2-6 and Angus 1-6. The doubles got off to a bad start for Jamie and Angus being 3-0 down however they brought it back to 3-2 with some excellent winners however the Lancaster team were dominant throughout sadly leading to a 6-2 defeat. The other doubles game got off to a bad start by losing the first game, however Rhondell brought it back by hitting some wonderful serves bringing us right back in it. Some great hitting by the Leicester Grammar team meant that the doubles then led to a convincing win of 6-2. This led to a tie; a sudden death tie break had to be played by Rhondell and James. After a shakey start, the Leicester Grammar team were dominating leading the tie break by 8-4. The ball was hit deep to the back of the court, James Mackay was in position and hit a winner down the line, meaning that there were 5 match points to come Leicester Grammar's way. Only needing the one, Rhondell Stabana hit a powerful volley at the opponent, it was too powerful to handle, causing him to hit it out. This was a great victory for the team. Thanks go to Mr.Picknell.

24 May 2010 - U13 Boys Tennis v.Kibworth

The first matches were singles which were very intense and unfortunately they finished 3-1 up. Next came the doubles, which were very tight matches but we managed to win both at 3-3. Unfortunately, we lost the match tie-break leaving the score 4-3 to Kibworth. A great performance from all the team and "Thank you " to Mrs Pollard for coaching us. The team consisted of Joseph Cook [7B], James Hunt [7E], Alex Tutt [8D] and myself.

24 May 2010 - U12 Cricket v. Ratcliffe

On a hot day, we fielded first and made a good start with Harmeet Makan picking up a wicket in his 2nd over thanks to a solid catch from Tom Fowler. Afer that, they started to score quickly , mainly through the inaccuracies of our bowlers and had reached 48 -2 from only 8 overs. Then Rohit Francis and Devin Patel introduced some much needed control, both bowling very accurately and picking up 5 wickets for only 12 runs between them in their 8 overs. The fielding was also improving and Rishi Patel took a very good catch at square leg from a shot that would definitely have gone for four had he missed it. Tom Fowler kept up the pressure with two good overs and picked up two wickets, one courtesy of an excellent catch from Rohit to leave them 71 all out off their full 20 overs.

Our reply did not start well with Sonnie Broadley falling to only the second ball of the innings and the captain Jahangir Khan following soon after. James Hunt and James Willmott steadied things with some good shots and positive running and, when James was run out, Oliver Marriot played some powerful strokes to help see us home and into the quarter finals.

Final score LGS 72 - 3 [11.3 overs] Ratcliffe 71 all out [ 20 overs]
Notable performances - Rohit Francis 3 - 5 and an excellent catch , Devin Patel 2 - 7, Tom Fowler 2 - 2, James Hunt 18*, James Willmott 16 and Oliver Marriot 10*.

24 May 2010 - U/15 Cricket v/s Burleigh College

Our second league fixture began with a good opening partnership of 29 between Jamie Jameson and Shan Khan. Jamie was out for a fluent 12 and Shan continued to 44, his highest score of the year to date. We then lost 3 quick wickets but an excellent partnership of 85 between Alex Frith ( 48 - run out ) and Chris Sansom (17no) took us through to an imposing score of 171 for 5 off our 20 overs.

Burleigh had a very good start to their innings with an opening partnership of 80. They attacked the bowling throughout and it was only some tight bowling and excellent fielding that kept them behind the rate. As pressure built, wickets began to fall and Chris Sansom, Tom Clay and Zain Rizvi all took 2 wickets allowing LGS to win by 22 runs.

Over 300 runs were scored in 40 overs and this is as much a reflection on the fine pitch and quick outfield ( full 65 yard boundaries) provided by our Head Groundsman Matthew Hodgson as it was on the fine standard of attacking batsmanship shown during a grand afternoon of cricket.

Mr L. Potter

18 May 2010 - U13 Cricket News

17 May 2010 - Maks Orzel [Year 11] - Race Walking and Rowing

Race Walking

During April Maks took part in his first race since his return to training and took the silver medal in the 5km u17 Race Walking National Championships event at Hackney. He has also received an ESAA gold badge for achieving the fastest time in the Chris Smith League races and this was followed by a gold medal win in the AAA track and field event at the Alexander Stadium Birmingham. Maks took part in the 3km race walk where he managed to knock off 11 seconds of his personal best completing the walk in 15mins. 15secs.

Rowing

On 21st March Maks rowed with the Leicester J16 coxed four taking part in the Lincoln Head Race rowing upstream over a distance of 3km. The four not only won their race but also took the trophy for the fastest youth crew on the day.

On Sunday 18th April, at the Leicester Regatta, Maks represented Leicester in the J16 category in a single scull which he won, and as part of the coxed four in the Men’s Intermediate 3 (novice) they made it through to the finals in which their opponents were Jesus College, Cambridge. Maks’ crew consisted of four 15 year old boys and a 13 year old cox against four 6’5” 20 year old men and their cox. Never-the-less, the Leicester crew was undeterred and gave an incredible performance keeping up with the Cambridge crew neck and neck for the entire 750m only to be beaten by less than metre at the finish line! As a result of their performance the Leicester boys have been invited to spend a day rowing at Cambridge.

Maks also took part in the Junior Inter Regional Regatta which was held at Holme Pierrepont on Sun. 25th April 2010. He represented the East Midlands in a coxed four and an eight. The eight had a very close race but only managed to come 5th out 12 crews. However, it was a much better row for the coxed four as Maks and his team-mates took second place winning the silver medal for the East Midlands bettering the bronze from last year.

Congratulations to Maks on all his acheivements this year.

17 May 2010 - U/15 Cricket v/s Rawlins College

A good performance from our U/15 XI in their first League fixture of the season. Rawlins batted 1st scoring 106 for 4 off their 20 overs. The best of the bowlers were George Hutchinson with 2 for 14 and Shan Khan 2 for 16.

In the reply Captain Zain Rizvi got his side off to a good start with a well constructed 28 and this was followed by 21 from Chris Sansom and a not out 20 from Alex Frith which took us home with 3 and half overs to spare and 6 wickets left.

Mr L. Potter

14 May 2010 - Milly Raven

Congratulations to Milly Raven who has retained her place in the England U16 Rounders team. This is particularly impressive as England Rounders has undergone a restructuring process by dropping age groups and reducing the squad sizes, Milly is only one of 5 girls to keep their place. She will play against Scotland on May 15th and then Wales on June 12th.

In addition after attending an Olympic event trying to find 'raw' talent she has been invited to Great Britain softball training! Good luck Milly!

13 May 2010 - U/13b Cricket v/s Judgemeadow School

Leicester Grammar lost the toss and were put into bat in this County Schools League fixture.
Judgemeadow have a good tradition of producing excellent cricket teams and LGS were soon in trouble against a talented group of bowlers. Niraj Mivani was the top scorer and had a good partnership with Alex Djemil which allowed the side to finish with 70 for 8 off their 16 overs.

Judgemeadow were also soon in difficulties and Captain Prab Jaswel produced a super spell of 4 overs 1 maiden taking 4 wickets for 11 runs. He was backed up by all his other bowlers and wickets fell at regular intervals. The fielding was sharp and Toby Hill behind the stumps was solid and workman like.

Eventually Judgemeadow were bowled out for 51 to give LGS a victory by 19 runs. Well done to all and we look forward to our next league fixture against The City of Leicester School.

Mr L. Potter

13 May 2010 - Alex Schlindwein wins Silver

Well done to Alex.

12 May 2010 - U12 Cricket v. Brookvale

After losing the toss and being put in to bat, we made a good start through opners James Hunt and Sonnie Broadley, with James in particularly playing some good shots and running well between the wickets. After Sonnie was out, runs did become quite hard to come by but fortunately wides from the opposition kept the score mounting. A flurry of wickets then put us in a difficult position but James Willmott batted very well near the end, hitting the bad ball hard and putting pressure on the fielders to bring us up to a defendable 108 after 20 overs.

When we bowled, all the bowlers kept things tight to start and after 12 overs, they had only made 33 with Harmeet Makan and Devin Patel both picking up a wicket while Rohit Francis took two [ including one from the team's first catch of the season by James Willmott]. A couple of inaccurate overs with lots of wides and no-balls and some robust hitting by two of their batsmen pushed their score up but we were always in control and Shaylin Patel finished things off taking two wickets in the final over to leave us winners by 30 runs.

Final score LGS 108 - 4 [20 overs] Ratcliffe 78 - 8 [ 20 overs]
Notable performances - Rohit Francis 2 - 10, Shaylin Patel 2 - 4, James Hunt 29, James Willmott 22*.

10 May 2010 - 1st XI Cricket News

A sunny day on the 10th May Rugby School provided the perfect setting for a National Schools Twenty 20 competition. It was unfamiliar territory for many of the boys in the first XI and the coloured clothing and white balls provided a new dimension. The opposition were strong and their cohesion was apparent on a day of highly skilled, challenging cricket. Robbie Berkeley was the top scorer on the day with an innovative knock of 58 against a forceful Uppingham side. The boys played to the best of their ability producing some good performances and this was highly commended by many of the spectators. The extra experience and ability of the opposition took its toll in the end but the school 1st XI competed well through a long day. We played 3 fixtures on the day v/s Uppingham, Oakham and Rugby Schools

Ross Clarke, Captain of 1st XI.

06 May 2010 - World 8 Ball Pool Championships

John Bowkett [Year 11] has been selected to represent England in the World 8 Ball Pool Championships in Blackpool at the end of June. He will play in the team event, the World Junior Singles and the World Junior Masters. We wish John all the best in this.

06 May 2010 - U13 Cricket News

An enjoyable afternoon's cricket at Grantham for the first game of the season. Kings batted first and the U13's should have restricted them to around 120 which would have made for a very close game. Some good bowling form Sachin Abeysundera (3-24) helped. In reply Zayaan Khan (41 n.o), Patrick Sadd (35) and Dhruv Chudasama (15 n.o) all batted very well. A few things to work on from here but an encouraging start.
Final score - Kings Grantham U13 XI 154-8 LGS U13 XI 114-4

04 May 2010 - 2nd XI Cricket News v W&QE College

LGS batted first in a 30 overs a side match and after a torrid start the opening batsmen Henry Green and Declan O’Callaghan weathered the storm and proceeded to put on 39 for the first wicket. After this encouraging start both openers were out in quick succession and W&QE then played their master stroke of introducing a spin bowler who ran through most of the remaining LGS batsmen taking 5 for 31 in his six overs. The resulting total of 85 was never going to be enough and so it proved as the W&QE opening batsmen knocked off the required runs in 19 overs.

Final score - LGS - 85 all out W&QE - 86 for 0 wickets.

29 April 2010 - Hockey News

The Leicestershire & Rutland Hockey Association (Schools & Youth) had a celebration evening last night at County Hall hosted by Mr Roger Wilson, Chairman of the County Council. Leicester Grammar School were well represented amongst the award winners.

Congratulations to:

Maddie Smith who was named as a Most Valuable Player for her commitment, determination and battling attitude.

Jessica Hickman who received The President's Award for being the highest level performer in the county as an England U18 player.

Mrs Hutchinson who was named as a Volunteer of the Year for her efficient team management this year and many previously.

27 April 2010 - 2nd XI v Oundle

Oundle won the toss and elected to bat in a 30 overs a side match. Against an experienced and seasoned side LGS struggled to contain the aggressive Oundle batsmen and this was not helped by far too much wayward bowling. Wickets did eventually fall as the bowling improved but the damage had already been done and Oundle closed their innings on an impressive 219 for 7.

In response the LGS batsmen showed their inexperience as poor shot selection against decent bowling resulted in the regular clatter of ball on stumps. Fortunately some lusty hitting by Faraz Mahboob and Simran Deol enabled LGS to achieve a reasonably respectable total of 111 in reply.
Notable Performances - Jamie Short 3 for 36

Final score - LGS - 111 all out Oundle 219 for 7

27 April 2010 - 1st XI Cricket

The 1st XI started the season on Tuesday 27th with a trip to Oundle. Bowling first in ideal conditions, we started steadily, with tight spells from Clarke and McGuinn restricting the hosts to three an over without the reward they deserved. Spin from Andy Williams and Avish Patel’s excellent spell both brought wickets in the later stages of the Oundle innings, followed by an unfortunate collision between the two in the field. LGS were able to control the run-rate despite Patel’s injury, and hold our opponents to 149-2 after 30 overs.

We began our own innings similarly to earlier in the day, with the openers playing cautiously while maintaining a competitive run-rate. Spencer was lost for 22 in the 20th over thanks to some persistent bowling from a solid Oundle attack, with LGS requiring an accessible 66 from the following ten to secure the win. However, Berkeley fell for 74 and Clarke a rapid 12 before wickets were lost quickly in the concluding overs, leaving LGS a disappointing 8 runs short of the required total at the close.

Thanks to Mr Howe for coaching the side. The squad wish Avish well with his recovery.

R.Berkeley.

Despite taking a 3-0 lead against Delisle it couldn't be sustained and the 'A' team in the end lost by one goal.

The 'B' team played some excellent netball beating Humphrey Perkins and losing to Delisle. To gain a place in the 1/4 final they needed to win their final game against SJNCC. It was an exciting encounter but unfortunately we lost by one.

11 March 2010 - U15 XV dispatch John Cleveland College with style to reach the County Final

Leicester Grammar School U15 XV progressed to the County Cup final with a comprehensive 36-0 defeat of local rivals John Cleveland College. Having been on the wrong end of a thirty point defeat at Hinckley earlier in the season, and having been focussing on sevens since the defeat of Ratcliffe College, the squad knew that a highly committed performance would be necessary against a side known for physical and direct rugby. LGS seized the initiative right from the start, camping in the JCC twenty-two and after being held up over the line Sam Lovett charged down a kick before touching down for the first score. The LGS forwards then exerted total control with their pick and drive game, consistently gaining ground as JCC were blown away in the tackle area. This dominance resulted in another three tries to make the score 24-0 at half time.
The second half brought more of the same, and the limited opportunities JCC had with ball in hand were quickly snuffed out by tigerish LGS defence. The superb back row of Myles Keable, Will Davison and Sam Lovett harried and tackled all day, while two monstrous hits by James Mackay and the outstanding Ed Milne raised morale even further. What made this performance especially pleasing, however, was the constant threat posed by the LGS backs. With Jamie Jameson providing swift service, Jack Clark orchestrating things superbly at fly half and Tom Clay running hard in the inside centre channel, the backs had a real cutting edge which culminated in scores from Forrest Francis, who carried powerfully all game, and Clark, who made it to the line with a glorious jinking run. There were contributions from some unsung heroes too - Jacob Marlow was strong over the ball, Rhondell Stabana ran elusively and Stuart Pirrie impressed with his work rate at the breakdown.
Congratulations to the squad on a magnificent all-round performance and a genuinely eye-catching result, of which they should be very proud. All that now stands in the way of retaining the County Cup won by last years LGS U15 cohort is the final, to be held at Loughborough University in two weeks time.

S Jessop

In several games, the girls pulled back from losing positions to take the match. Defensive play and tactics have both shown considerable improvement.

Mr.Perry.

10 February 2010 - U15 XV march on in County Cup

Leicester Grammar School U15 XV progressed into the next round of the County Cup with a 36-7 hammering of Ratcliffe College on Wednesday afternoon. Playing against the wind in the first half, the forward pack put in arguably the most dominant half of rugby I have seen at U15 school level. Outstanding ball retention, clinical and aggressive rucking and inspirational offloading led to four first half tries, the pick being Jamie Jameson’s dart down the right wing and John Fry’s sprint under the posts from within his own half. Had Sam Lovett realised that it is customary to touch the ball down when over the opposition try line, rather than pass it forward to a team-mate, the damage could have been greater!

The second half was a scrappier affair, with the scrum being re-set on numerous occasions, and the opposition frustrated by their inability to secure any quality possession. The referee’s attempts to exert his authority, however, were clearly not aided by the fact that he was apparently wearing tights.

Overall a superb performance which, despite some indiscipline in the closing minutes, deserves to be remembered for all the right reasons. John Cleveland College will present a sterner physical test in the next round, and LGS will be eager to turn round a thirty-point defeat from earlier in the season

10 February 2010 - U15 Netball News

Congratulations to the U15 netball team who played magnificently last night to narrowly miss out on a place in the final.

They were winners of their section winning all 3 games:
v Ashby won 14-1
v Leicester High School won 9-0
v Robert Smyth won 6-4

In the quarter final a tough game against Ratcliffe didn't really materialise as Leicester were the better team throughout and won 7-1.

In the semi finals Leicester were against the pre tournament favourites Loughborough High School. Despite taking a 3-0 lead Loughborough were just too strong and they came out winners 7-6.

Well done to everyone involved, it is the best result the school has had in this competition for a number of years:
Ashleigh Goodenough (Capt), Emily Hunt, Philippa Bliss, Amy Ground, Nicky Siddall, Lauren Ramsbottom, Emily Bexon & Anna Meadows.

For the first time we hosted Senior netball teams from Stamford School with the following results:

The same situation occurred in the second game against the South West with the Midlands losing by three tries to one.

Harry played well in both games and now awaits to hear whether he has been selected for an England Trial at Stowe school on the 7th of February. We would like to congratulate Harry on his success so far.

25 January 2010 - U14 Rugby News

Without a doubt, this was the finest performance from the U14 XV so far this season. The first ten minutes saw Oakham camped in the LGS half, with some very strong runners hitting the ball at pace. The Grammar defence stood firm with some excellent tackling and strong work at the breakdown. Precise and long kicking from Fossey edged LGS away from trouble and another turnover saw Oakham give away a penalty five metres out – a quick tap was interfered with by a retreating player and the referee awarded a penalty try, which was subsequently converted.

Unfortunately a lapse in concentration in defence saw the Oakham inside centre crash over on half time, but the second half saw LGS dominate throughout. The pack produced quick, good quality ball and three further tries were scored in quick succession. The scrum was very solid and our jumpers did well to secure any ball against their large Oakham opponents. The final score saw a long kick fielded by Fossey in his own 22, who stepped his way past several defenders before offloading to Peter Sankey for an excellent try. Every player put their all in to this fixture, and it certainly shows what this team are capable of if they perform for the whole 50 minutes – a target that they have finally achieved!

Tries : Josh Measures, George Fossey, Charlie Thacker, Peter Sankey, Penalty Try

Conversions : George Fossey (3)

Final Score - won 31 - 5.

24 January 2010 - Table Tennis News

On Sunday 24th January the U16 Boys’ Table Tennis team played in the ESSTA Zone Finals at Grantham.

Our first group match against Tuxford School, Nottingham proved to be a close encounter with everybody contributing to our winning score of 6-2—Jameel Jetha and Mark Cairns both won two while Kishan Lakhani and Jimmy Crawford won one each.

Next up were the ever strong Bedford Modern team and despite some close matches we lost the contest 7 – 1 – Mark gaining the only victory. This meant that as group runners up we qualified for the semi finals where we met Valley School. They proved to be far too strong for us, with a team containing two England internationals and despite one or two close matches we went down 8 – 0 .

23 January 2010 - U12 Rugby News

On Saturday the 23rd of January Leicester Grammar School played Kibworth High School.

KHS had a strong start with a try within the first five minutes. LGS came back with some strong forward play and good handling which resulted in our first converted try. This was due to an excellent training ground move that worked perfectly and the Captain piled over the line after some good sleight of hand. More pressure from LGS resulted in a second try thanks to excellent back play and slick handling.

KHS came back stronger in the second half with excellent forward play. Their continued pressure from their forwards resulted in a second try however again we responded with a try to make the score 17-10. KHS applied heavy pressure during the last 15 minutes however LGS defended extremely well stopping any further score.

Many thanks to Mr Thacker for some excellent refereeing and to Mr Potter for coaching.

Jonathan Ramsbottom

Captain – U12

23 January 2010 - U14 Rugby News

After a considerable break, this was a pleasing performance by LGS on the whole. A bright start saw quick ball released to the backs and slick handling saw Will Plant go over in the right hand corner. This theme continued with tries from Will Hunt and Charlie Thacker, but several chances were wasted allowing Kibworth to score a converted try just before the break which kept them in the game.

LGS then attacked straight from the kick off and concerted forward pressure allowed Aaron Pike to crash over the line. Again Kibworth hit back with a converted score but Leicester immediately responded with two further scores to close out the game.

There were many impressive performances but weak defence meant that Kibworth’s main runners kept them in the game until the last quarter. Jack Bell ran strongly on the wing and scored his first try of the season with George Fossey counterattacking very well from full back. The decision making of the forwards was also very much improved and we look forward to the challenge of Oakham on Monday.

Tries : Will Plant (2), Will Marriott, Charlie Thacker, Will Hunt, Jack Bell, Aaron Pike

Conversions : George Fossey (2)

Final score - won 39 -17.

18 January 2010 - Cross Country News

Following a good season in the Leicestershire Schools cross country races, where his combined race positions placed him 5th in the Inter Boys section, Jamie short has again been selected to run for Leicestershire in the Inter counties event in February. He needs to run well here and at next week's Schools County Championship to gain selection for the English Schools National Championship in March. Rachael Maddocks has also been selected for the County in the Inter Girls section.

Running for his club, Kibworth and Fleckney RC, Jamie also finished in a very good 6th position in last weeks Leicestershire and Rutland County Championship. Racing in a blizzard, with the course completely covered in snow and sub zero temperatures, he ran very well in the Under 17 category where he was running against boys his age and one year above. He will run in the Midlands Club championships at Stafford Common in a couple of weeks time.

Harry Short finished 18th in the U15 again running with boys a year older than him.

12 December 2009 - U12 Rugby News

On Saturday 12 December LGS played Loughborough Grammar. This was always going to be a hard game and Loughborough didn’t disappoint, turning out a very strong and large team.

The first ten minutes were extremely difficult with their big pack driving home a try, and although they continued to hit our pack hard, our defence was very strong. LGS conceded a second try before finally getting some good ball to the backs resulting in Matthew Cook getting our first try.

Our defence play continued to be strong with some excellent tackling from Joe Glover, however their large pack managed to drive through two further tries. Our second try came from Matthew Cook following some excellent pressure by LGS.

The final score of 44-10 did not reflect the extremely good standard of play by LGS. I would like to thank all of the team for their full commitment during the game and also Mr Potter for his excellent coaching.

12 December 2009 - 2nd XV Rugby News

The Leicester Grammar School 2nd XV finished their fixtures for the term with a third successive win, this time over strong local rivals Loughborough Grammar School. Although suffering the loss of their talismanic forward Greg Taylor shortly before the kick off to the 1st XV the team simply shrugged this off and got on with the job in hand taking the game to Loughborough straight from the kick off. The first half was an even affair with Loughborough going 5 nil up when a careless LGS pass went astray but we then played some of our best rugby of the match in the closing 10 minutes of the half with several continuous phases of rugby culminating with a richly deserved score under the posts by the outstanding Harry Milner which was converted by Henry Green. The second half was dominated by LGS with only sloppy tackling enabling Loughborough to make any real headway. The game was finally settled in favour of LGS by two excellent tries one from Rory Walkinshaw and the other from captain Ellis Wills-Wilson following good forward play and flowing three quarter movement. Final score - won 17-12.
Standout players this week were: Forwards:- Joe Ford and Tom Measures. Backs :- Harry Milner, Henry Green and Leo Yorke.

12 December 2009 - U15 XV Rugby News

Last week’s 19-12 defeat by King’s Grantham provided a welcome wake-up call ahead of the traditional end of term local derby. Having narrowly lost with a weakened team in the Daily Mail Cup earlier in the term, LGS were eager for revenge and took the initiative right from the kick off. Committed at the breakdown and determined in the tackle, Leicester simply did not allow Loughborough any time to settle, with Sam Lovett making life very difficult for the opposition fly-half. Alex Frith ran hard and straight in the 12 channel, while Tom Clay kicked beautifully, regularly turning the Loughborough wingers and gaining good ground. Leicester were not afraid to keep the ball in hand, however, and a daring attack from deep, started by Jamie Jameson, nearly resulted in a superb length of the field score. A plucky last ditch tackle denied Milne a try and indeed it was up front that Leicester had real superiority, with Milne, Summerton and Davison carrying powerfully throughout the match. The ball retention was excellent from LGS, and some well-organised pick and drive rugby yielded two first half tries from the aforementioned Will Davison and Ed Milne. Striking the ball well, though fortunately not from hand this week, Jack Hiorns converted one to send LGS into half-time with a deserved 12-0 lead.

Having been asked by Mr Jessop for more of the same, albeit with a lower penalty count, LGS started the second half in similar fashion. The customary ten minutes of madness did materialise, however, and despite a superb break and score by Jack Hiorns, Loughborough scored two tries of their own, one a result of sloppy tackling and one from a clever double dummy by the fly-half. LGS were good value for their eventual 17-10 victory, though, after a seemingly interminable final play. Myles Keable tackled his socks off all day, while man of the match went to Jamie Jameson for an excellent all-round display combining elusive running, clever tactical kicking and above all superb decision making. The whole squad should be proud of turning round a heavy defeat at the hands of Loughborough last year, and will head to QEGS Ashbourne on Tuesday for the Daily Mail match with a spring in their step.

S.Jessop.

05 December 2009 - U14 Rugby v Kings Grantham

Another pleasing victory against a Grantham side who had several impressive players. LGS started against the wind and powerful forward play saw them score two well worked tries. Once again the tight five dominated in the set piece, but the phase play seen against Lawrence Sheriff was sadly lacking at times. After the break Leicester used some long kicks to pin the opposition back in their own half and hence Grantham rarely threatened due to some solid defensive work, particularly by fly half Charlie Thacker and the back row of Campbell, Sankey and Measures.

As time began to run out for Grantham the LGS forwards again pressurised their opponents and a solid scrum saw an impressive blind side break for Rob Turner to score the finest try of the day in the corner. Again, in patches LGS showed their true capabilities but should strive to perform like this consistently for 50 minutes. Final score 24-0.

Scorers and notable performances from Harry PENFOLD, Aaron PIKE, Rob TURNER and Josh MEASURES. George FOSSEY – 2 conversions.

05 December 2009 - U13 Rugby v Kings Grantham

LGS were up against a very physically mature Grantham side that in addition contained a number of talented players and it is to the great credit of the LGS team that they stuck to their task with real commitment throughout the game. The score certainly does not reflect the contribution that the LGS boys made to an entertaining match with our backs looking to run the ball at every opportunity showing real ambition and making some impressive line breaks. Unfortunately the final execution of the passing and receiving of the ball let us down and ultimately prevented LGS from getting on the score sheet. It is worthy of note that the majority of the opposition tries were scored from their own half following our mistakes at the breakdown, usually by their outstanding number 10. The team should feel proud of their contribution to this game and were in no way disgraced by their overall standard of play. Final score - lost 43 - 0.

01 December 2009 - 1st XI Hockey News

U12 'A' won 5-2
U12 'B' won 4-0
U13 VII lost 14-2

28 November 2009 - 2nd XV Rugby v. KES Aston

After last week’s excellent win against JCC the team were raring to go against this week’s opposition and started the game with some explosive running from James Hemingway who quickly ran in two long range tries. LGS dominance continued for the rest of the first half with further tries coming from Henry Green, which he proceeded to convert, and a third for James Hemingway. The second half saw KES come back strongly into the game aided and abetted by the forward’s decision to (a) give away a string of needless penalties at the breakdown and (b) keep the ball tight and away from our free running backs! On the rare occasions that the ball was released along the back line in the second half the LGS backs again showed what they were capable of with Alex Francis running in two long range tries. Although the second half was something of a disappointment after our scintillating start to the game LGS nonetheless ran out comfortable winners by 34 points to 3.

Tries – James Hemingway 3, Alex Francis 2 and Henry Green 1

Conversions – Henry Green 2.
Notable Players - Greg Taylor, James Hemingway, Alex Francis and Henry Green

28 November 2009 - U14 Rugby v. KES Aston

LGS played well in patches in this fixture, but basic errors were frequent particularly in the second half. Some excellent patterns of play saw Leicester race in to a 24-0 lead at half time, including an impressive piece of individual skill from captain Fossey to cross for his score. Unfortunately the second half saw LGS make countless handling errors and decision making by key players at crucial times was very disappointing. This meant there was only one more score in a game where Aston rarely troubled the LGS defence. All involved must realise that against stronger sides these issues could result in a loss despite being the more talented side.

The pack dominated once again throughout with the back row playing particularly well. In the backs Rob Scudamore put in an impressive display playing out of position and Oliver Moriarty made his debut on the wing for the U14s.

Final score 31-0 . Notable preformances from George FOSSEY, Peter SANKEY, Aaron PIKE, Tom CAMPBELL, Josh MEASURES.George FOSSEY – 3 conversions.

24 November 2009 - U15 Rugby Daily Mail Vase v. Uppingham School

Having been well beaten by a physical and abrasive John Cleveland College side on Saturday, LGS U15 knew a better performance would be required against a historically strong Uppingham XV. Monday’s weekly training session with ex-Wellington and Tigers back row Ben Herring was extremely productive, and everyone was looking forward to putting his advice into practice. Despite a spicy pre-match session and some strong words in the changing room, however, LGS made another disastrous start against the strong wind, conceding two soft early tries due to weak tacking and some sloppy handling in the admittedly tough conditions. This was to prove the catalyst, however, for a superb fightback in the closing part of the first half. LGS opted to play positively and keep the ball in hand - this reaped rewards as the forwards picked and drove hard at the visitors, offloading well and gaining ground repeatedly. Uppingham simply could not cope with some outstanding LGS support play and a barnstorming run by Michael Davies led to Myles Keable scoring in the corner, before Ed Milne, who was a real handful all match at the breakdown and with ball in hand, added another. With the score at 12-10 to Uppingham but with the wind in Leicester’s favour in the second half, coach Mr Jessop told the side to be patient, keep the ball alive and that the points would come. That said, Uppingham’s outstanding No13 broke several tackles early in the second half, leading to a try that made the score 19-10. LGS struggled to win possession for a short period, before the forwards gradually regained their stranglehold. Jamie Jameson and Tom Clay kicked intelligently, pinning the visitors back in their 22 and despite some valiant attempts to run the ball out of defence, LGS pressure eventually told and further tries from Milne and Jameson (one converted from the touchline by Jack Hiorns) put LGS 22-19 ahead. The Uppingham backs were always a threat and caused LGS a real fright in the dying seconds before the whistle went and a sigh of relief went up. The match was a superb advert for the game, with both sides showing real enterprise in adversity and superb discipline. The Leicester back row was a highpoint yet again, while special mention must go to Man of the Match George Summerton for endless powerful carries and some technically superb work over the ball. This was certainly the high point of the season so far and a performance of which everyone involved can be very proud.

S.Jessop

21 November 2009 - 2nd XV Rugby v. John Cleveland College

In the always-challenging environment encountered at JCC the team built upon the performance against Trent College earlier in the week and once again took the field brimming with confidence and ready for the tough task ahead. Straight from the kick off sloppy work by the forwards allowed JCC to score a soft try but this merely served to galvanise the team into a period of sustained high quality play with the forwards and backs inter-linking smoothly to score two excellent tries by Alex Cohen and Ellis Wills-Wilson and thereby finish the first half, playing up the slope, 10 points to 5 ahead. In the second half LGS were again dominant mixing outstanding defence with penetrating attacking moves that eventually saw Ellis Wills-Wilson go over in the corner for his second try of the match. Although JCC countered strongly and scored a late try LGS ran out thoroughly deserved winners by 15 points to 10.

Standout players this week were: Forwards:- George Lyons and Joe Ford . Backs: - Alex Cohen, Rory Walkinshaw, Harry Milner and James Hemingway - making his comeback after several months out with injury.

Tries – Alex Cohen and Ellis Wills-Wilson 2

17 November 2009 - Hockey News

The 1st XI travelled to Uppingham to play a friendly fixture earlier in the week. All matches at this point are in preparation for the Midlands tournament on Monday 30th November at Rugby School. It was a close contest with Leicester coming out on top by a single goal.

Uppingham 0-1 Leicester Grammar School

The U12 and U13 hockey teams played friendly matches against strong teams from Spratton Hall with the following results:

U12 A lost 2-6
U12 B lost 0-11
U13 XI lost 0-7

17 November 2009 - 2nd XV Rugby v. Trent College

This really was an excellent match to watch with both sides committed to open rugby and running the ball at every suitable opportunity. LGS got off to a slow start, which was understandable as we kicked off about 20 minutes after arriving, and the opposition quickly scored a penalty and a converted try. This roused LGS into their stride and we quickly responded with two outstanding tries by Harry Milner to go in at half time 15 – 14 down. Trent got off to a good start in the second half and scored an unconverted try and then with seconds to go after several phases of continuous possession the LGS backs combined well to put Harry Milner over in the corner for his third try to leave us with the conversion to win the game. Alex Francis struck the ball beautifully but alas the ball drifted agonising wide to miss by inches leaving Trent to run out as winners by 20 points to 19. In the end the unit skills of the Trent forwards at the breakdown were decisive as they prevented us from getting enough quick ball to feed our quicker and more incisive backs.
Standout players this week were:
Forwards:- George Lyons and Joe Ford .
Backs:- Harry Milner
Tries – Harry Milner 3

Conversions – Alex Francis 2

14 November 2009 - U15 Rugby News

LGS U15 XV continued to build momentum with a workmanlike 17-5 victory over Lawrence Sheriff School on Saturday 14th November. With players returning from injury, hopes were high for a more fluent display but appallingly blustery conditions made handling extremely difficult. Neither side troubled the scorer in the first half, but with the wind at their backs LGS scored three second half tries through Ed Milne, Jack Hiorns and Myles Keable, all of which were the result of strong driving play from the forwards and keeping the ball alive out of the tackle. A touch more composure in the opposition 22 would have led to two or three further scores and the forwards will need to be more physical at the breakdown in the second half of the season, but this was a pleasing performance after a three week break from Saturday rugby. The back row of Myles Keable, Sam Lovett and Will Davison were outstanding once again and provided that we can keep key players fit, I look forward to the XV really expressing themselves in the busy run up to Christmas

The 1st XV took on Lawrence Sherrif school resulting in a win 56 - 24. A superb performance all round but especially by Ben Morris who created and finished his 5 tries with real skill and pace and Mat Davies whose attacking and defensive qualities were shown to great effect in this really entertaining match played with great spirit and attacking intent by both sides.
Tries: Alex Williams, Ben Morris 5, Matthew Davies 2, Josh Connor, Josh Williams.
Conversions: Josh Connor 3
The 2nd XV also won 19-10.

14 November 2009 - U14 Rugby News

On Saturday 14th of November the U14's played Lawrence Sherriff which resulted in an outstanding performance in very difficult conditions. LGS played with the wind at their backs in the first half and raced in to an unassailable 28 – 0 lead at half time. The forwards dominated the set piece, especially the lineout, and handling in the backs was very impressive indeed. The second half was a tougher task but LGS showed determination in defence as well as adding another score 10 minutes in to the half. Every player had their finest game of the season and this was a very structured, well drilled performance.
Final Score 35-0.
Scorers and notable performances came from Will ALLOWAY, Charlie THACKER, Will MARRIOT, George SAWERS, Josh MEASURES . George FOSSEY kicked 5 conversions.

14 November 2009 - U12 Rugby news

On Saturday the 14th of November the LGS U12s rugby team played Lawrence Sherriff. LGS started off with some weak play, letting Lawrence Sherriff break through our defence and eventually score a try. Later in the first half we pulled together with stronger defence and attacking play. We had some good runs from Matthew Cooke, Joseph Cook and Joseph Glover. We came back in the second half determined to win and scored many more times ending in a convincing win for LGS.
Jo Cook scored 5 tries and Matthew Cooke 1 but they were all set up by fine team play and we all look forward to next weeks game against Mkt Bosworth HS.
Many thanks to Mr Potter for coaching us during the match

13 October 2009 - U15 Rugby News

Despite being decimated by injuries, the LGS U15 XV produced an heroic performance, only to be narrowly edged out 17-10 by Loughborough Grammar School in the Daily Mail national competition. Missing an incredible six of the backs that travelled to Northampton for the season opener in early September, LGS competed ferociously throughout, with the Leicester forwards superior to the Loughborough eight in many facets of the game. A well taken try from emergency full-back Jack Hiorns and an opportunistic dart from outstanding scrum-half Jack Clark were scant reward for the commitment shown, and once again poor handling in the backs proved to be our undoing as an early dropped ball in the opposition 22 resulted in a breakaway that Loughborough converted after several phases of play. Both sides coped admirably with some mystifying decisions at the breakdown and kept their discipline well, but ultimately a couple of lapses in defence cost LGS dear and we simply could not convert our at times overwhelming pressure into points. Congratulations go to U14 fly-half Charlie Thacker, who stepped up with a brave and composed performance, and we hope that inspirational skipper Will Davison’s elbow injury does not prove to be serious. With a long lay-off until the next scheduled fixture the whole squad must look to build on this morale-boosting display as key players return from injury.

10 October 2009 - U15 XV Rugby News v Bablake

On Saturday the 10th of October, the U15 XV played Bablake School away. Having beaten them last year we were hoping for a repeat performance. The game got off to a poor start and within 10 minutes we were under our own posts 5-0 down. For the rest of the half we put in a lot more effort, making tackles and generally winning ball. Our hard efforts were rewarded with a try from a break scored by Jacob Marlow, who was flipped over the line in a tackle. This bought us level at 5-5 and we played to the end of the half. During this half, unfortunately, we had further injuries, this time to wings Rhondell Stabana and Alex Morris. We began the second half well with plenty of possession and good defence. We managed to get up into their half and a ruck was formed inside their 22. From this Myles Keable stormed through the middle and ran past their defence to score. Regrettably the kick was missed leaving at us at 10-5. Within the next 5 minutes we had a scrum just outside their 22. From number 8 Will Davison picked it up and crashed through to score. This was then converted by Jack Hiorns, extending our lead to 17-5. It was at this point that we lost yet another key player, James Mackay, due to injury. We were now struggling for numbers and with a mix around we managed to sort things out. After some bad tackling and disorganisation, however, Bablake managed to score again, bringing the score to 17-10. We then pushed on for the final 5 minutes with Jack Clark gathering his own excellent 'chip and chase' from a scrum to touch down under the posts. The final score was 24-10 to LGS and the race is now on to patch up a squad ravaged by injury ahead of the next round of the Daily Mail national competition.

10 October 2009 - 2nd XV Rugby v. Bablake

A very entertaining match saw two evenly matched sides battle it out for supremacy. The LGS backs, who played throughout with pleasing ambition, looked to move the ball wide at every opportunity on the occasions when the forwards were able to gain quick ball against the larger Bablake pack. The tries scored were typical of the two teams’ strengths with Bablake scoring a close range forwards’ try and LGS producing a flowing movement along the three quarter line resulting in Harry Milner breaking out from his own 22 and via good inter-passing with Ellis Wills-Wilson finishing off the break himself with a superb try in the corner. Standout players this week were: Forwards:- Joe Ford. Backs:- Harry Milner and Alex Cohen. Final score 5-5.

10 October 2009 - U12 Rugby v. Bablake

LGS got off to a strong start, scoring quickly with a try from Matt Cooke. The pack continued to work hard and were rewarded with a second try when the ball went down the line. However, just before half time the team let their concentration drop which Bablake took advantage of and scored a try which was then converted, leading to a half time score of 10-7 to LGS. The team came out fighting after half time and Oliver Marriott quickly scored another try. Bablake came back strongly and five minutes before the end, scored again. The final result was a narrow 15-14 win for LGS.

03 October 2009 - U15 Rugby News

Having unconvincingly squeaked past De Lisle School in the first round of the Daily Mail Cup, the LGS U15 XV played Princethorpe College on Saturday 3rd October. We all knew this would be a tough game made tougher by the absence of key players Sam Lovett and Tom Clay due to injury. LGS started strongly and put a constant stream of pressure on their players. Unfortunately, after some handling errors, Princethorpe managed to take advantage and stormed through to score. We went back determined to get the next score which is what we did after some great play by Jack Clark, who set up Jamie Jameson to score a well-worked try. Again we went on the offensive, keeping the ball alive and after a while we were rewarded by another Jameson try. Occasional defensive lapses meant that Princethorpe were able to use a strong wind to their advantage to go in at half time 15-12 ahead. At half time Mr Jessop was confident that our strong and mobile forward pack would be able to continue their excellent driving and offloading game and that we would take control of the game. This was not to be, however, as some woeful handling in the backs and poor decision making led to us conceding two tries to turnovers. Despite an excellent, strong finish by Forrest Francis we were 27-19 down with five minutes to go. As we looked to push for victory, scrum half Jameson left the field with a broken arm and in the resulting confusion we conceded another soft turnover try. Looking back, the game was ours for the taking and with a bit more composure we could have easily converted our pressure into points. Having played some lovely rugby at times, defeat was a bitter pill to swallow and the squad will have to show resilience in the coming weeks as the injuries mount up. A failure to develop our back play is also preventing us from posing a real threat – something everyone is keen to rectify.

03 October 2009 - 2nd XV v. Princethorpe Rugby News

Although shorn of a number of players due to ailments picked up during the Camp Craft expedition of the previous three days a much changed team nonetheless went out and produced another very pleasing performance. The LGS forwards played well, but unfortunately their lack of cohesion at the breakdown allowed the opposition to turnover or disrupt what should have been good attacking ball and this hindered the smooth flow of ball to a three quarter line keen to move the ball wide at every opportunity with Matt Davies and Rory Walkinshaw to the fore here. LGS dominated in terms of territory but as in our previous game naïve defending allowed Princethorpe to score two soft tries sandwiching a superb individual effort by Leo Yorke. Standout players this week were:Forwards:- Joe Ford, Alex Bentley and Tom Measures. Backs:- Matt Davies and Rory Walkinshaw. Captain - ELLIS WILLS-WILSON. Final score - LGS lost 12-5.

The LGS A squad have now qualified to the County League finals which will be held at Soar Valley Community College on Wednesday 18th November.

26 September 2009 - U15 XV Rugby

On Saturday the 26th of September the U15 XV played against Lancaster School for Boys. This was expected to be a tough game as Lancaster had beaten us over the last two years. After a warm up and a no excuses talk from Mr. Jessop we were ready to go. The game got off to a slow start and we went through the standard repertoire of pick and goes as well as testing out the backs’ moves. We got down into their half in the first 15 minutes and stuck on in until we were awarded a penalty for them holding on on the floor. This was in range of our kicker and Jack Hiorns slotted it to give us the lead 3-0. For the next 10 minutes we let it slip, allowing them 2 tries; 1, despite what looked like a forward pass and the other as a result of poor tackling. This got us focused back on task and we managed to get back into their half. Myles Keable was set up by Will Davison to run in under the posts, taking us back into the game at a score of 8-10. Jack's kicking was impeccable, levelling at 10 all. We held on for another 5 minutes till half time. The first half was good in terms of improvement from last year, yet it was a disappointing start compared to last week, with some poor decision making and sloppy execution from the backs wasting several clear try scoring opportunities.
5 minutes into the second half we conceded a penalty from a ruck which Lancaster chose to kick. The kick was an easily converted one which once again put us behind at 13-10. This was also a bad start as within the next few moments, their beast of a full back ran the ball right back at us and broke through what seemed like every player to score. Everyone was annoyed at this and we got our heads together and went on the offensive. Luckily the kick missed and with twenty minutes to go, we were controlling the game, spoiling their ball as well as holding our own. Things were not looking good on the injury front, however, as Jack Hiorns injured his leg and had to come off with Krish replacing him as hooker. We continued on the offensive and again received a penalty just out side their 22 metre line. This we opted to kick at the sticks. The kick unfortunately went astray but the Lancaster player who caught it got nailed by Forrest Francis, who picked up the ball and ran over the line to make it 15-18. Regrettably the kick went astray. With 10 minutes to go we were desperate for another try which was given to us by outstanding support play from Sam Lovett. Sam managed to offload to Forrest who once again ran over the line to score. Now the score was 20-18 and we needed another score and to run down the clock. We held out several opposition attacks and once again got a penalty on the 22 metre line. To run down time, Jamie Jameson had a go at kicking for 3 points and missed by about an inch. This led down to the last play where we took the ball and kicked it out, ending the game. This second half was exceptional and so was Sam Lovett who was awarded man of the match. The whole XV is aware that both tacking and finishing will have to improve if we are to pose a threat to the stronger sides on our fixture list.

26 September 2009 - U12 Rugby News

On Saturday the 26th of September, the LGS U12 rugby team played Lancaster Boys. We expected a hard match, however at the start of the game it was clear that LGS were far more experienced, skilled and disciplined than Lancaster Boys. During the first half our team performance was excellent with strong rucking, mauling and scrums, plus good handling and back play.

The second half was equally good and we managed to play the full squad in different positions. Full time resulted in a convincing win for LGS.

This was the u/12’s first win of the season and we hope for many more. Training on Tuesdays is very important and if all squad players can attend it will help our development a great deal.

21 September 2009 - Cricket Report 2009

The School has just completed its most successful cricket season with a number of finals being played in the first week of the Advent term.

The u/15 team completed a 10 wicket win to capture the County u/15 trophy with outstanding performances from Tom Measures with 4 wickets and openers Avish Patel (26no) and Antoine Mcguinn (35no) who put on 95 for the 1st wicket to take their side home.

The u/14's won a tight game against Soar Valley in the Semi Final with important innings from Alex Frith, Zain Rizvi and George Hutchinson and also some fine bowling from the trio. The standard of fielding from this side was exceptional. Unfortunately Lutterworth HS were unable to play the final so the County Cup has been shared.

The u/13's had already made it through to the Midlands final, losing to Solihull school in June. During the holiday period they came together to win the City Cricket Academy Coloured clothing competition, held at LGS. Captain Tom Smith was the batsman of the tournament, Sachin Abeysundri the bowler and Kasim Khan the player of the tournament. They have now also won their u/13 County final scoring 108 for one with Will Hunt 44no and Tom Smith 32 and bowling Rushy Meade out for 79 with Patrick Sadd, Kasim Khan and Mo Mulji all bowling good spells.

The u/12's also completed a final win bowling the opposition out for just 40 and reaching the target with the lost of only one wicket. The side was well captained all year by Jack O'Callaghan and have a large group of talented young cricketers.

All this success and enjoyment should be put alongside the results of the u/13 girls cricket team who earlier in the year won both the County indoor and Outdoor Competitions. The 1st XI also made it to the Semi final of the County Cup u/18 competition.

The facilities at the new school have made a great difference to the standard of play and I would like to thank Head Groundsman Matthew Hodgson and his team for producing so many wickets on a young square and also a "thank you" should go to all the team managers who have given their time and expertise to help and develop our young cricketers.

19 September 2009 - Netball News

The U12 & U13 VII competed in Loughborough High School's Festival of Sport on Saturday with both teams playing very well so early in the school term.

The U12 team acquitted themselves admirably throughout the day with the following results:

ROUND 1 – v DELISLE LOST 5-2, v THE PERSE GIRLS WON 2-1
v DAME ALICE WON 4 -0, v SHEFFIELD LOST 2 -6
ROUND 2 - v LOUGHBOROUGH HS B LOST 1-4, v STAFFORD HS LOST 2-6, v THE PERSE WON 2-1
This meant an overall finish of 8th place which was fantastic.

The U13 team didn't fare quite so well in the first round which meant a place in the Plate final. Fine wins against Dixie GS and Market Bosworth secured the plate trophy which was an excellent end to a great day.

Well done to both teams.

19 September 2009 - U15 Rugby News

On Saturday 19th of September the LGS U15 XV played Northampton School for Boys away. The game got under way with NSB choosing to receive the kick. It was a poor kick off and after a few rucks and phases of play NSB managing to score due to poor tackling. After a reinforcing team talk we managed to get our act together and got down into their half. Near the ten meter line a penalty was conceded by NSB and we chose to kick. This proved to be a bad decision since the kick fell short but the forwards were there immediately, turning the ball over to produce it for our backs. The ball was shipped out and Ed Milne stormed through to score from a crash ball. This made the score 7-5 after the kick was converted by Jack Hiorns. The game continued at a lively pace with the forwards dominating any scrums and most line outs and the backs testing out their new moves. Unfortunately the NSB winger managed to break a few tackles and score taking them into a lead of 10-7 which was not a fair reflection of play. LGS soon managed to get down into their half and after several phases of driving play Ed Milne once again crossed the opposition line for his second score. Eventually, before half time, NSB managed to tackle one of our players into touch and got a line out inside their twenty-two meter line. When they reduced the numbers Myles Keable pressurised their scrum half into dropping the ball before picking it up and charging over the line to make the score 19-10 to LGS at half-time. After reassuring words from Coach Mr Jessop, we began the second half with our heads high. In what felt like seconds, however, NSB managed to break through several tackles to score. This was followed in quick succession by another soft NSB try – a very poor start to the second half. We were now trailing 22-19 and we continued with great determination and effort but unfortunately Will Holley suffered a serious neck injury. As the ball was passed out from a ruck, it landed on the floor and was grabbed by Will. He was then hit hard by an opposition player and driven into another players knee. After 20 minutes an ambulance arrived and Will was stretchered off to hospital. The match was abandoned at that stage, with LGS trailing 22-19. Overall it was a superb performance to turn around a fifty point deficit from last year. The forwards were physical, committed and worked their socks off, all of which was not reflected in the final score. Well done to Will Holley, who has happily made a full recovery, Ed and Myles, as well as to Jacob Marlow making his LGS debut, and a fine one at that.

19 September 2009 - U12 Rugby News

On Saturday the 19 of September, the LGS U12 rugby team played Northampton School for Boys. When their team turned out onto the pitch it became clear that we had a difficult game ahead, due to the size and speed of many players in their team.

However, LGS started exceptionally well, winning most of the forward play even though the NSB pack had a definite height and weight advantage. The backs play was equally good with brilliant handling and some excellent runs, finally resulting in a try by Matthew Cooke after 15 minutes. Unfortunately NSB broke through our defence just before half time ending in a 5-5 score going into the second half.

In the second half LGS defended exceptionally well and denied NSB further tries. Again, due to the good handling and support play of LGS we nearly scored on two occasions however didn’t manage to get over the line. Unfortunately, NSB made an interception which resulted in a try and quickly scored a third try as a result of a ‘lucky bounce’.

The final score of 5-19 didn’t reflect the standard of play by LGS; I would like to thank all of the squad for their full commitment during the game.

Many thanks also to Mr Potter and Mr Howe for there excellent coaching and refereeing.

19 September 2009 - 2nd XV Rugby v. Northampton School for Boys

For our first game of the season and with virtually no time for any meaningful preparation the team produced a very promising performance against a strong NSB team whose season had begun two weeks ago. LGS played the majority of the rugby and indeed had more than their share of territory and possession, however, two lapses in defence which cost us two tries and two decisions by the referee that denied us two tries decided the outcome of this game with our excellent teamwork try scored by Henry Green on the right wing being outweighed by the three scored by NSB.
This performance showed that there is much to build on this season as there were many standout performances on the day notably by the Year 11 students many of whom excelled.
Try – Henry Green
Final score - Lost 15 - 5

15 September 2009 - County Netball

12 September 2009 - 1st XI Hockey

The 1st XI played their first game of the season with a friendly match against Great Yarmouth Hockey Club. It was a nice game with both sides getting to grips with the new rules. Miss Williamson playing against the school side added some extra competition for the girls. The final score was 3-2 to the guests with Jess Hickman scoring both. (Miss Williamson was also on the scoresheet for the opponents!)
